FANS OF UNIX ON THE MAC, take note: Some current Mac X Windows server-software packages and terminal emulators are changing hands. Apple has turned over development of its MacX server software to AGE Logic (800-742-5243 or 619-755-1000), which has renamed the product XoftWare for Mac OS (Apple will continue to sell the product under the MacX name). White Pine Software (800-241-7463 or 603-886-9050), another vendor of UNIX-connectivity software, is expanding its product line and distribution reach by acquiring the France-based About Software.
AGE's XoftWare for Mac OS is PowerPC-native and offers support for X Windows version X11R5 plus some X11R6 extensions, such as R6 fonts and colors. Other new fea-tures include automated host log-in; support for Apple's Communication Toolbox; and remote log-in via SLIP, PPP, and ARA. The software is Open Transport-compliant and sells for $295 (or $395 if bundled with PacerTerm terminal-emulation and Internet-access software).
Apple, which will market the software under the name MacX 1.5, says that it won't be competing with AGE for X Windows server-software business. AGE plans to market XoftWare primarily to corporate sites, and Apple will pursue educational and other markets.
White Pine Software's goal in acquiring About Software is to incorporate the latter company's terminal-emulation technology into its own terminal-emulation and UNIX-connectivity products. About Software's 5PM terminal emulators have been available but not well known in the U.S.
